The Dubai Municipality has announced completion of the heritage landmark development project in Deira’s markets, that includes creating three heritage tourist trails that covers the total length of about 1784 metres and cost about AED9.5 million.
This project is set to preserve the historic characteristics of the traditional marketplaces while at the same time enhancing the visitor experience and also supporting over 500 shops in Deira’s Grand Souq.
The three trails – The Gold souq trail (995 metres), the Al Ahmadiya School Heritage Axis (430 metres), and the Spice Souq Axis (359 metres) – span over 25800 square metres connecting the seven traditional markets, that includes;
- Herbs Market
- Spice Souq
- Utensils Souq
- Perfume Market
- Carpets Market
- Textile Souq
- Household Market
Also, in addition with the Gold Souq and the Al Ahmadiya area. This project connects these markets with the surrounding historic landmarks, in turn creating an immersive journey for the visitors, integrating shopping, culture and tourism.
The Enhancements include the rehabilitation of public spaces, installing fabric shading structures covering about 210 square metres, and a canopy behind the Bin Naeem Mosque that covers 200 square metres.
This project has upgraded shop façade lighting, installing 38 column-mounted signboards and 154 floor markings that enhanced 770 square metres of pavements. These three public squares are further developed with seating areas and improved amenities.
Preserving Heritage
The Municipality has ensured that using authentic local materials like sarooj (lime-based plaster), while restoring the market structure and façades, maintaining their cultural integrity.
